Frequently Asked Questions

Which mode should I choose?

Direct install gives you sub-second detection, PCAP capture, and on-router firewall rules. NetFlow export keeps VyOS lightweight with no additional software. For routers under 1 Gbps, direct install is recommended. For high-throughput or minimal-footprint deployments, use NetFlow.

What VyOS versions does this work with?

Both modes work on VyOS 1.3 (equuleus) and VyOS 1.4 (sagitta). Direct install requires Python 3.8+ which ships with both versions. NetFlow uses built-in flow-accounting available in all recent VyOS releases.

Can I switch modes later?

Yes. If you start with NetFlow and want to switch to direct install (or vice versa), just reconfigure. There is no lock-in. The Flowtriq dashboard node works the same way regardless of which mode feeds it data.

Does VyOS flow-accounting support IPFIX?

Yes. VyOS flow-accounting supports NetFlow v5, v9, and IPFIX. Flowtriq accepts all three. We recommend NetFlow v9 for the best balance of compatibility and metadata detail.
